A Date Like No Other

Posted: September 25, 2015 Under: Loving God

By Jenn 2 Comments

I sat in the lecture at Bible Study Fellowship, notebook open on my lap, pen at the ready. We’re studying Revelation this year, a book I don’t often open due to the confusion it awakens, and I’m looking forward to learning more, to hopefully coming away with a better understanding of John’s purpose and meaning. We … Continue reading "A Date Like No Other"

An Abundance of Apples

Posted: September 24, 2015 Under: This Thing Called Life

By Jenn 1 Comment

I picked the apples from the tree in our yard a few weeks ago, gathered two bushels full. The man who supposedly knows about such things at the local farm down the street tells me I did so a good six weeks too early, that there’s no way they’re ripe yet, but they were falling … Continue reading "An Abundance of Apples"

The Blessing (?) of a Perfect Meal

Posted: September 23, 2015 Under: Loving God

By Jenn 1 Comment

We had a lovely end-of-summer feast on Sunday evening: fresh tomatoes and basil from the garden combined with a bit of cucumber, a clove of garlic, a splash of balsamic vinegar; oh-so-sweet corn on the cob from the farm stand just around the corner; and T-bone steaks, a treat from the freezer, rubbed with a cocoa … Continue reading "The Blessing (?) of a Perfect Meal"

Don’t Shout Your Abortion. Tell Your Story.

Posted: September 22, 2015 Under: Loving Others

By Jenn 1 Comment

I sat down this evening to write, my thoughts turned toward mothering and being at home and the long days and the short years and how to express the conflicting emotions of spending my days with a one-year-old. I’d worked out some of the phrases, had a good deal of the post written in my … Continue reading "Don’t Shout Your Abortion. Tell Your Story."

On Running and GPS Tracking and Life

Posted: September 21, 2015 Under: This Thing Called Life

By Jenn 2 Comments

Most of my runs happen inside these days; I pound out the miles on the treadmill while Katie plays on the floor nearby. Running fits best into our lives if it happens while Jonathan is at work, and I prefer this solution to pushing the jogging stroller. I listen to a podcast as I go, … Continue reading "On Running and GPS Tracking and Life"

Worthwhile Weekend Words

Posted: September 20, 2015 Under: This Thing Called Life

By Jenn 2 Comments

It has been far too long since I offered an edition of Worthwhile Weekend Words. My apologies. But I do have some good ones (even if some are a few weeks old!) for you today: Have you seen this piece over at The Atlantic regarding the harm that the “trigger warning” and “microagression” culture is … Continue reading "Worthwhile Weekend Words"

Just the Right Place, Just the Right Time

Posted: September 19, 2015 Under: Family and Parenting

By Jenn 2 Comments

It was a chance sighting, a moment of brilliance I’d never noticed before today. I suppose you could say I was in just the right place at just the right time, there on the floor of our sunken living room, stacking foam blocks to make a tower as the late afternoon sun slanted in through … Continue reading "Just the Right Place, Just the Right Time"

A Hint of Fall

Posted: September 18, 2015 Under: Family and Parenting

By Jenn No Comments

Things have been somewhat quiet around here lately. I blame this on several things: the transition from two naps to one (which is more difficult on me than it is on her), distracting novels, time devoted to other projects, and a quirk in me that prefers long-form (and therefore time-consuming) writing over shorter snippets. At … Continue reading "A Hint of Fall"

Afraid of Falling

Posted: September 02, 2015 Under: Family and Parenting

By Jenn No Comments

She sits on the floor, her legs bent in front of her, the soles of her feet just touching. She talks to herself, a constant stream of babble, as she flips through her board book, pausing on each page just long enough to rest her tiny fingers before moving to the next. I smile; my … Continue reading "Afraid of Falling"

What I Learned in August

Posted: September 01, 2015 Under: This Thing Called Life

By Jenn No Comments

Emily over at Chatting at the Sky has made it a practice to record the things she learns each month. It’s a valuable habit, this habit of reflection, and so I’ve been joining her in it this year. If you’d like to join us as we remember, you can comment on this post with what you … Continue reading "What I Learned in August"

About Me

Palmer-Family-23 Hi. I’m Jenn. Welcome. I’m glad you’re here.

When I was in high school and college, I thought I would change the world. I would do big things. Become a missionary, perhaps. Start a non-profit. Develop some new product or idea that would save lives. I bought the message being sold in youth groups and Christian schools at the time: that we were made for more than ordinary lives.

But then … well, then life happened.
