On Church Messages and God’s Promises

If I close my eyes, I can see her face as she said it, the earnestness, the innocent faith, the honest desire to find reason in a situation where there was none to be found. As a church body, we had been praying for a young mom with stage IV cancer, praying hard for a … Continue reading "On Church Messages and God’s Promises"

Worthwhile Weekend Words

I didn’t post a weekend words post last week because of Easter, but there were a few good posts regarding Holy Week that I don’t want you to miss. First, this reminder – that, as Christians, we celebrate an execution, that crosses were the nuclear weapon of the ancient world. “In the pantheon of potential … Continue reading "Worthwhile Weekend Words"

{Pretty} Snow! We got snow! The first of the season, here in April, and just a dusting, really, but I’ll take it. I am grateful for the storm and for the flakes and for the quiet beauty of snow falling. {Happy} and {Funny} For this little girl’s first Easter, Jonathan’s parents prepared an egg hunt … Continue reading "{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}"

Post-Holiday Slump

I expect big things from our holy days. I expect a surge of faith, a new connection to God, a more profound understanding of the mystery of Christ. Some change in understanding or attitude in me to mark what God has done. Yet here we are. Lent is finished, Good Friday observed, Easter celebrated. We practiced a … Continue reading "Post-Holiday Slump"

{Pretty} My sister and brother-in-law gave us this orchid last August, on the anniversary of the day we lost our daughter. I have a brown (very brown) thumb, so I cannot take credit for its health, but isn’t it lovely? {Happy} I joined a group of fabulous women in celebrating my sister’s birthday this past … Continue reading "{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}"

What I Learned in March

Emily over at Chatting at the Sky has made it a practice to record the things she learns each month. It’s a valuable habit, this habit of reflection, and so I’ve been joining her in it this year. If you’d like to join us as we remember, you can comment on this post with what you … Continue reading "What I Learned in March"

Good finds this week: I am not a tattoo person myself; not only do needles and I not get along, but I just don’t see the appeal. This post over at Storyline Blog gave me pause to think, however, and reminded me that all of us are telling our stories in different ways. It is … Continue reading "Worthwhile Weekend Words"

Lifelong Friends

“China, two years after the end of World War II. Two American couples, husbands both pilots for the Marine Corps, wives both new mothers. A shared love of flying, a shared enjoyment of golf. A shared language, not to be disregarded in a foreign land far from home. Superficial things on which to build anything … Continue reading "Lifelong Friends"

While She Sleeps

Here I sit, in a corner of the nursery, the rocking chair swaying slightly as I type. She naps, the blanket rising and falling with each breath. Her head faces the wall, turned away from me; I can just make out the curl of hair on the back of her head, the curve of her … Continue reading "While She Sleeps"

Some good reads this week: A few on the topic of loss – first, this essay from Paul Kalanithi, a young doctor who was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in 2013 and passed away at the beginning of this month. His writing is poignant and beautiful, but if you don’t have time for the entire thing, … Continue reading "Worthwhile Weekend Words"

About Me

Palmer-Family-23 Hi. I’m Jenn. Welcome. I’m glad you’re here.

When I was in high school and college, I thought I would change the world. I would do big things. Become a missionary, perhaps. Start a non-profit. Develop some new product or idea that would save lives. I bought the message being sold in youth groups and Christian schools at the time: that we were made for more than ordinary lives.

But then … well, then life happened.
