A Hint of Fall

Posted: September 18, 2015 Under: Family and Parenting

By Jenn No Comments

Things have been somewhat quiet around here lately. I blame this on several things: the transition from two naps to one (which is more difficult on me than it is on her), distracting novels, time devoted to other projects, and a quirk in me that prefers long-form (and therefore time-consuming) writing over shorter snippets. At … Continue reading "A Hint of Fall"

On Swimming, and Mothering, and Writing

The thermostat climbs, here in our house built facing the summer sun. Unwilling to turn up the air conditioning but desperate for relief, I put on my swimsuit, gather my towel and my flip-flops and my daughter. She laughs as I rub sunscreen into her round cheeks, squirms in excitement as I tug the swim diaper … Continue reading "On Swimming, and Mothering, and Writing"

Blackberries, Part II

Posted: August 13, 2015 Under: Family and Parenting

By Jenn 4 Comments

The blackberries ripen again, luscious and tempting, begging me to venture out into the hot summer sun and to pick them while the picking is good. I was, perhaps, a bit territorial this week; Jonathan told me the neighbor kids down the road, the ones who don’t really live here but whose parents come two or … Continue reading "Blackberries, Part II"

~Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life with Like Mother, Like Daughter~ {Pretty} The recent heat wave has done wonders for my garden. All of my tomato plants are outgrowing their cages; I should have believed the tags when they said to plant them three feet apart! These beauties are on my sungold … Continue reading "{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}"

{Pretty} We took a walk last Saturday, Jonathan and Katie and Euclid and I. It was beautiful all around, from the weather to the scenery to the togetherness, but I thought the late-afternoon light in this pasture was especially lovely. (I realize many of my pretty things are related to nature. I can’t help it; … Continue reading "{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}"

Today’s {Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real} brought to you by the letter ‘B’. {Pretty} Unlike the parts of the country which are suffering from far too much snow, January and February have been unseasonably warm here in our neck of the woods. Our afternoon walks involve t-shirts and sunglasses and are accompanied by the sounds of … Continue reading "{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}"

{Pretty} The sunrise as the storm was rolling in last Friday morning was spectacular. This photograph does not even begin to do it justice. It completely merited rolling out of bed (and this coming from a VERY sleep-deprived mom!). {Happy} Each year after Thanksgiving and Christmas, I pick up a few bags of cranberries and … Continue reading "{Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real}"

What I Learned in January

Posted: January 31, 2015 Under: This Thing Called Life

By Jenn 7 Comments

At the end of each month, Emily over at Chatting at the Sky looks back at what she learned over those four weeks. It’s a valuable practice, one that encourages introspection and thought, one that results in a list of lessons that can be referenced time and time again, and so today I am joining her … Continue reading "What I Learned in January"

On Winter Storms

Posted: January 27, 2015 Under: Family and Parenting

By Jenn No Comments

The snow swirls, flakes drifting lazily from a storm-darkened sky. I must admit this is somewhat anticlimactic; yesterday, they were predicting doom and gloom, telling us that certainly the end was coming, that we would all be confined to our homes as the world turned white. There will be piles of snow, they told us, … Continue reading "On Winter Storms"

Focusing on the Finish Line

Posted: November 25, 2014 Under: Family and Parenting

I’m not usually one for cutesy sayings, for pithy quotes, for warm and fuzzy cliches – in fact, I generally scorn them. Though I often strive for contemplative and beautiful here in this space, my sense of humor tends toward the cynical and the sarcastic. (Case in point: I find this post and its follow-up … Continue reading "Focusing on the Finish Line"

About Me

Palmer-Family-23 Hi. I’m Jenn. Welcome. I’m glad you’re here.

When I was in high school and college, I thought I would change the world. I would do big things. Become a missionary, perhaps. Start a non-profit. Develop some new product or idea that would save lives. I bought the message being sold in youth groups and Christian schools at the time: that we were made for more than ordinary lives.

But then … well, then life happened.
